Debatable - Is 3D printing a good solution for problems in space?

Assessment Overview:

Wednesday 31st May
Grade 7 have been enjoying the creating stage of the design cycle the past couple of weeks, working hard to create a product that can be used in outer space, and also fit for 3D printing. A few students have completed their work and have been lucky enough to have their designs printed.

Lego Robotics

We have been working with Lego Mindstorm in Mr. Brent's absence. Lego Mindstorm is a lego robotics kit that is used around the world and used in an international competition known as the First Lego League
We are running the same session with Grades 6,7 and 8 in Mr. Brent's absence, to give them a basic understanding of lego robotics in all grades.

Although we will not be competing this year, we wanted to introduce FLL and Mindstorms to the students as we hope to introduce teams as early as next school year. FLL is a great experience for a student and incorporates many transferable skills necessary in and out of school.

We have largely focussed on the concept of teamwork in the beginning. We moved onto a basic understanding of gear chains and have just started to look at the EV3, the robot 'brain' itself and the simple programing that goes with it.

The students seem engaged in this activity so far. The focus has not been on assessment or some manner of summative outcome, it has been on time-management, collaboration, respect and the idea of how to fail well and learn from it.

Unit 1 - Ancient Greece Temples

Statement of Inquiry: Careful planning can result in action that stands for the test of time.

Key Concept: Systems

Related Concepts: Function, Resources

Inquiry questions:
Factual - Why were the ancient temples built?
Conceptual - How do buildings demonstrate what life was like in the time it was built?
Debatable - Should the temples have been built?

Assessment Overview:

Tuesday 27th September, 2016
Today, Grade 7 handed in their completed temples for display. The effort they have made is commendable and they should be proud of their efforts. These temples will be displayed in the School Library and are worth checking out.

Friday 9th September, 2016
Grade 7 are continuing to work hard on putting their temples together. We are starting to get a glimpse of what end products will look like.

Friday 2nd September, 2016
Grade 7 put their plans to work today and begun creating their temples. It was great to see the students using their plans to guide them.
Early phases of Stage 3 - Creating
Friday 26th August, 2016
Grade 7 moved into the second stage of Design, developing ideas. They commenced making drawings of what they think their temple would like, whilst considering the materials they will use, the steps they will take to complete it and any key features. Below is the task descriptor with the section of the rubric related to this stage, as well as the presentation used to introduce the new stage requirements.

Friday 19th August, 2016
Today, grade 7 were introduced to their new design task. The first stage of design is 'inquiring & analyzing'. As students are preparing to design an ancient Greece temple, they must first complete appropriate research. Students needs to research about Athena and collect relevant information about the temples in Greece. Below is the document the students received in class to support/guide them in meeting their requirements.
